THE CLINICAL PROGRAMME

MONTROSE STABLES & EQUINE ASSISTED THERAPY

EAP (Equine Assisted Psychotherapy) is an internationally recognized intervention, known to be especially effective in addressing the psychological, behavioural, and emotional difficulties associated with chemical dependence, addiction and compulsive behaviour.

EAP is an experiential and self-reflective process in which clients work with horses to complete ground-based, problem solving activities. In the attempt to achieve their objective deep seated problems, which the client may be unaware of or reluctant to address, are revealed. By bringing these difficulties to light in the here and now the client is able to confront, and overcome, their fears and frustrations.

Horses have an extraordinary ability to read and respond to the body language, and mirror the inner struggles, of clients. Learning to work safely and effectively around horses requires patience, trust, compassion, respect, awareness and self-confidence. The horse’s natural responsiveness empowers clients to challenge their perceived limitations and to discover and accomplish their personal goals.

The relationship built between a client and a horse is a partnership in which both are empowered to learn, heal, and grow. EAP utilises the unique and ancient bond between human and horse to break through barriers often encountered in traditional psychotherapeutic settings and is, as such, an important addition to our treatment programme.
